Getting music to listeners has never been easier, thanks to the internet, but over the last year, exclusive arrangements with streaming companies (Apple Music and Tidal especially) have walled off some stars from their core fans. Young fans, especially, are unlikely to pay monthly subscriber fees to multiple streaming services to ensure ongoing access to high-profile releases. And it’s incumbent on these stars to pull off a splashy rollout that somehow doesn’t feel tacky or inaccessible or overly determined by corporate interests.
