Branding Environmental Signage | Part Two

Signage design as a discipline has come a long way since the hand-painted highway signs of the fifties. City skylines have become illuminated with brand identification. Signage systems around the world are playing an increasing role in expressing and revitalizing the image and experience os a destination. In Seoul, Korea and China, large digital billboards grace the sides of skyscrapers to capture our attention. Digital media opens the door for interactive storytelling.

In the eighteenth century, laws required innkeepers to have their signs high enough to clear an armored man on horseback. In the twenty-first century, cities and towns around the world routinely revise sign codes to create environments that support the image that a community wants to portray, and to regulate standards to protect public safety.
